Static vs Video Ads: Which Should You Test?

Static and video ads solve different communication problems. Choose the format that can explain the offer clearly with the assets and production time available.

Match format to the message

A static image can communicate a simple offer, product view or comparison quickly. Video can demonstrate a sequence, explain a process or show movement. Neither format has a universal performance advantage across businesses.

  • Use static when one frame can carry the essential decision information.
  • Use video when seeing the action helps explain the value.
  • Use a sequence or carousel when the message has distinct steps or options.
  • Account for the production effort needed to refresh and adapt the concept.

Make a fair comparison

For an illustrative website offer, a static version could show the completed enquiry screen while a video shows the short journey to it. Keep the audience, promise and destination aligned, but adapt the execution to each medium. Comparing an unclear image with a polished demonstration does not isolate the value of the format itself.

Judge business outcomes

Track relevant engagement, qualified enquiries or purchases and total production cost. Video views do not have the same meaning as completed enquiries; image clicks do not prove intent. Review whether the asset remains understandable on a phone and in the planned placements. Start with the strongest available concept, then use results to decide which format earns the next production investment.
