Facebook Ad Design Specs: A Production Checklist

Plan Facebook and Instagram ad assets for their intended placements. Use aspect ratios as production starting points, then confirm the current requirements in Meta’s Ads Guide and account preview.

Prepare a sensible export set

Common design canvases include square 1:1, portrait 4:5 and vertical 9:16. For example, a design team can prepare 1080×1080, 1080×1350 and 1080×1920 canvases. These are practical production sizes, not a claim that every placement accepts every format.

  • Keep key text, product details and the call to action clear of interface overlays.
  • Create a deliberate crop for each ratio instead of stretching the artwork.
  • Check small text and captions on an actual phone.
  • Review image rights, music permissions, spelling and destination consistency.

Inspect the placement preview

Upload a draft and examine each planned placement in the account. Look for cropped faces, hidden subtitles, unreadable prices and missing brand context. Confirm file type, length, dimensions and other requirements in the current official guide before export approval. Platform specifications and supported formats can change.

Give the operator an export manifest

Use filenames that identify concept, ratio, language and version. An example is quote-form-demo_9x16_en_v02.mp4. Include the approved copy, destination URL and notes about the intended placement. Retain the editable source separately from approved exports. A complete handoff reduces the chance that the right design is published with the wrong crop, old offer or mismatched caption.
