Website Redesign Checklist: Preserve What Works

A redesign should improve the customer experience while preserving valuable URLs, content and integrations. Inventory the current website before deciding what to remove or rename.

Record the baseline

Export the current sitemap and review important landing pages, search queries, backlinks and conversion paths. Save titles, canonicals and business-critical integrations. Use this inventory to distinguish a necessary change from a cosmetic preference.

  • Keep useful existing URLs when the page intent remains the same.
  • Map removed or replaced URLs to genuinely equivalent destinations.
  • Retain accurate content that helps customers decide.
  • Identify forms, payment flows and scripts that must survive the change.
  • Record performance and accessibility issues to verify after launch.

Test the migration map

For each changed URL, check the intended permanent redirect and final successful destination. Avoid redirecting unrelated pages to the homepage just to eliminate a 404. Update internal links, canonicals and sitemap entries to the final URLs. Check that preview settings such as authentication or noindex do not leak into production.

Launch with a recovery path

Use a reviewed preview, record the deployed version and keep a rollback option. Test contact and checkout flows on production, then inspect Search Console and analytics for unexpected changes. Some short-term variation is possible, so diagnose specific failures rather than reverting solely because one metric moved. A successful redesign keeps the business reachable and makes the important tasks easier to complete.
