Local Citations: A Practical Guide

A local citation is a mention of a business and its identifying information. Focus on accurate, relevant places where customers may look for the business instead of buying a large arbitrary directory count.

Create a canonical business record

Write the approved business name, public address if applicable, phone number, website and service description in one document. Use it when correcting listings and record who owns each account. Do not publish a private or unsupported address merely to make every field match.

  • Start with the business’s own site and eligible major profiles.
  • Check relevant industry or local listings that real customers use.
  • Correct material errors such as old phones or closed locations.
  • Avoid directories whose main purpose is selling ranking links.

Audit a small set carefully

For an illustrative business that changed its phone number, search for the old number and prioritise listings that still attract customers. Record the listing URL, incorrect field, correction method and verification status. A submission receipt does not prove the live information changed. Recheck the published listing.

Keep citations in perspective

Accurate listings support discoverability and reduce customer confusion, but citation volume alone is not a business outcome. Pair listing work with clear service pages and a working enquiry process. Keep access and renewal details with the business, and avoid giving multiple providers permission to create competing versions of the same profile. Update the source record when the business genuinely changes.
