A Practical Facebook Retargeting Strategy
Map audiences to intent
Someone who watched a short video has shown a different signal from someone who started checkout. Design the message around the event and its recency, and use only audience data that your business is permitted to use.
- Product viewer: clarify product use, suitability or an important feature.
- Checkout starter: explain delivery, payment or return information without inventing urgency.
- Service-page visitor: answer a buying objection or show relevant project evidence.
- Recent customer: exclude from acquisition messaging unless there is a suitable repeat-purchase offer.
Write the sequence before launch
For an illustrative online course, the first reminder might explain who the course fits, and the next could clarify time commitment. Repeating “buy now” to everyone does not address either question. Set audience windows around the actual purchase cycle and available audience size. Avoid very small segments that cannot support useful delivery.
Watch for diminishing value
Review reach, frequency, qualified outcomes and the incremental role of retargeting. A person already close to buying may convert after seeing an ad, but attribution alone does not prove the ad caused the sale. Where scale permits, use a suitable holdout or platform experiment. Exclude converted customers reliably and refresh the message when it no longer resolves a real objection.
