Facebook Ads vs Google Ads: Choosing a Starting Channel
Compare the buying situation
Google Search can reach people expressing a need through a query. Facebook and Instagram can introduce an offer while someone is browsing. Both platforms have additional formats, so this distinction is a starting point rather than a description of every campaign type.
- Known problem and urgent enquiry: investigate relevant Search demand and landing-page fit.
- Visually demonstrable product: consider whether a social ad can communicate value quickly.
- Unfamiliar offer: plan education before expecting a direct purchase.
- Limited budget: choose one clear test rather than underfunding both channels.
Make the comparison fair
An illustrative service business might compare search enquiries and social enquiries after using the same qualification definition, service area and response process. Keep platform-reported conversions visible, but reconcile sales in the CRM. A platform may attribute the same customer differently; adding both reported totals can overstate business results.
Decide using evidence
Estimate demand and costs before launch, then review qualified customer cost, contribution after acquisition and operational capacity. Search may be constrained by available demand; social may require more creative iteration. Use the stronger channel as a starting point and add the other only when it has a defined role. A retargeting campaign is not a substitute for a plan to acquire new demand.
